A Mom’s Guide to Saving Money On Braces: Tips from Dr. Bert Kelling!

unnamed

Braces, formally known as orthodontic care, can be provided in a huge variety of ways.  Usually braces are provided by an Orthodontist who has years of expertise training in order to know how to provide the best patient care. Every patient wants to not only achieve the best result, but the easiest and fastest way too (for the least amount of money!). We know you want to be smart about the cost of braces and we’re here to help!

1) Avoid compromise treatment.  If you spend money on compromise treatment leading to an incomplete result, all the money may be a waste. Incomplete orthodontic care is very hard to maintain and later can require re-treatment, costing even more.

2) Catch orthodontic problems early.  In addition to knowing all the different ways to move teeth, it is important to know how to select the best timing of care, not too early, causing unnecessary treatment, and not too late, making care more complicated.  Proper timing saves money, giving us our second point: be sure to catch any orthodontics problems early enough to provide care at the best time. This can prevent problems from worsening and causing more treatment and expense. Remember: the first orthodontist visit should be around age 7 or 8.  See our blogs on the “Timing Of Braces” by clicking here.

3) Ask your employer to add orthodontic care to your health insurance. Insurance coverage for braces usually provides $1,500 to $2,000 toward the cost of treatment. Adding coverage for braces to an existing dental policy is usually minimal extra cost. Watch out for waiting periods and plan ahead.

4) Use your retainers properly. After the braces are off, be sure to understand how to use your retainers properly to maintain your great result and avoid having to pay for more treatment later. After braces, teeth can shift easily, so retainers are very important. Your orthodontist has extensive knowledge of the wide variety of retainers and will recommend the best for each patient. Regular checking and proper management of retainers is also important.

5) Start financial planning for braces early.  By working with an orthodontist early, optimally starting around age 7 or 8, you will know if braces will be needed in the future. This will allow you to save up the fee ahead of time. When you can pay the whole fee at the beginning of treatment, usually you can get a discount on the fee. Early planning also helps you line-up insurance coverage on time!

The key to saving money on braces involve planning early, spending your funds wisely on expert, efficient orthodontic care, and conscientiously protecting your beautiful new smile for a lifetime.  That’s something to really smile about! Feel free to ask me more about how to save money on braces with Raleigh Orthodontics. The Right Time For Braces, Part 1

Happy_Children
The average age to wear braces is about 12 years old, but that’s not necessarily the best time to start braces. Why? Orthodontic problems vary a huge amount. From slightly crooked or spaced teeth, to severely protruding teeth (buck teeth), to major bite problems (lower jaw too far forward or too far back), to a bite that causes the jaw to grow to the side, to delayed eruption of teeth, just to name a few! Each of the many variety of problems effects the best time to start braces, some as early as age 7 or 8, and others as late as 18 or 19! Orthodontic problems can be divided into two types: those needing treatment in two steps (an early step and a later step) or those best treated in one step. Each of these steps has an optimum time to start depending on the details of the particular patient’s bite problem. It is important to know how to tell the difference between a problem needing two steps vs. one needing only one step.
Quality Braces Care:
Proper timing of braces greatly effects the quality of the care. If you start too early, the patient can wear braces longer than necessary. If you start too late, the patient might not receive the best result. Both lower the quality of orthodontic care. There are 7 principles that guide selecting the best time for braces:
1) Make treatment as simple as possible and still get the best result obtainable.
2) Treat to minimize irreversible problems.
3) If a current problem can cause other problems, keep that from happening, when reasonable.
4) Provide treatment that maximizes stability.
5) Consider the benefits to the patient of achieving a beautiful smile as soon as reasonable.
6) Avoid treatment that suffers from delays.
7) Minimize treatment costs in money and time.
Principle 1: Simplicity with the best result.
Sometimes there is more than one way to achieve the best result. The orthodontist has to know a wide variety of ways to make braces work so he or she can pick the simplest way for that patient to receive the best result. Broad, expert knowledge is important here!
Principle 2: Don’t allow irreversible problems if at all possible.
Sometimes there is a bite problem that if allowed to persist will become partly or fully irreversible. It’s very important to know how to recognize these, also requiring expert knowledge, experience, and to know how to treat these early enough to avoid an irreversible condition. Bites that cause the jaw to grow to one side are an example and have to be caught very early to avoid irreversible growth problems.
Principle 3: Don’t let one problem cause other significant problems.
Some bite problems can over time cause other problems, making the bite problem harder to get an excellent result. The best age for braces seeks that we have the highest degree of predictability and that we will obtain an excellent result. Not allowing a problem to compound many times makes a difference. With a severe overbite, for example, the upper front teeth go way down over the lower front teeth and can interfere with proper development and alignment of the lower teeth or impede growth of the lower jaw. Selecting these cases properly, with expert knowledge and experience, improves the quality of the result.
In “What is the Best Age for Braces? Part 2” we will look at the remaining principles and end wrapping it all up in how proper timing for braces, derived from expert knowledge and experience, supports providing braces for a lifetime of beautiful smiles. Stay tuned!

Affordable Braces

Affordable Braces

Orhodontics

Many folks these days want the benefits of braces- to enjoy a beautiful, healthy smile for a lifetime. More and more young people and adults are seeking these benefits, visiting us here at Raleigh Orthodontics, and enjoying seeing their smiles improve evey month. While the cost of orthodontic care has become more and more affordable, for some the cost can be a bit of a budget challenge. We have responded to this by offering a variety of ways that help everyone afford great orthodontic care.

THE COST OF BRACES

There are a variety of ways to afford orthodontic care here at Raleigh Orthodontics. Let’s start with the typical fee, say $5635, for full braces lasting about 18 to 24 months. This fee will include all the planning needed at the beginning as well as retainers at the end of treatment. You may elect to pay our typical initial payment of 15% to 25 %, then spread the remaining amount over 18 months. Most folks do it this way. If you can pay the whole fee at the beginning we’ll give you a 5% fee reduction for simplifying our bookkeeping.

MAKING BRACES AFFORDABLE

If you’d like to spread the fee out further to reduce the monthly payments we’ll help you with options for outside financing. The interest rate for these is usually very attractive and it helps you fit the cost of care into your budget.

Here at Raleigh Orthodontics we are very experienced working with a large variety of insurance companies and their various plans. This means we’ll file for your insurance coverage and apply the expected coverage amount to the fee, reducing the costs to you. Keep your coverage active during the whole time of treatment to take advantage of this benefit. We will determine the level of your coverage and explain it to you at your first visit.

NEW TECHNIQUES AND AFFORDABLE BRACES

With advances in braces technology we are able to keep our fees reduced, which certainly benefits everyone. The advanced new metals, such as nitinol, by working over longer time intervals, reduce the number of appointments. The newer orthodontic appliances we use also work automatically, over longer periods of time, keeping treatment simpler and easier on our patients. With these advances come higher quality results as well as efficiency, which makes getting a great result easier and more affordable. At Raleigh Orthodontics we’re always looking for ways to get super results as easy for our patients as possible.

COST OF BRACES or COST OF AN UNHEALTHY MOUTH?

While we know braces are more affordable these days than ever before, let’s consider what proper orthodontic care will save you in terms of avoiding future complications and problems. The social costs of not having an attractive smile have been documented scientifically and are significant. Showing off an unreserved, healthy, beautiful smile when meeting someone sends positive signals of enthusiasm for working with people. Well aligned teeth are easier to keep clean, which helps keep the teeth healthy our whole lives. And a healthy bite promotes health of the teeth by controlling wear and tear on our teeth. So, while the financial cost of braces is significant, the costs of not getting proper orthodontic care are usually much greater by allowing problems to persist.

Every day here at Raleigh Orthodotics, as we see our patients’ beautiful smiles develop, we see their spirits rise and the health of their mouths improve. We know we’re creating healthy, great looking smiles that will last a lifetime. These long term benefits make the cost of braces small compared to the wonderful benefits they produce. We’re happy to make these benefits available to you. Just give us a call at 919-847-6364 and visit us on the web at raleighorthodotics.com . We’ll see you soon!
